"If you're into Fennesz, read on.....this album will blow your mind. Ateleia is the project of one James Elliott, a Brooklynite unconcerned with the trappings of hiphop or post-punk, rather interesting himself in hypnotic soundscapes and stuttering electronic processes. Roping in Gastr Del Sol's David Grubbs among other collaborators he has created an album which truly feels detached from its surroundings. While Elliott manages to scrape up the distorted guitar manipulations of Fennesz, the drone sensibilities of Jim O'Rourke and the glacial 4/4 leanings of Signer he somehow has the knack of combining them in a way which truly feels mesemerising. Take 'Sea Horse Sculpture' for instance, which on opening sounds like the insectoid spattering and glitchy hisses will build into a mass of ambient noise and instead edges itself smoothly into some kind of minimal crush. This isn't your average electronic music though, beneath the cyclic beat structures and fluttering electric piano is a mire of experimental noise and expert manipulation. Those of you who enjoyed Kompakt's Pop Ambient series of releases will no doubt be intrigued by the blend of sound on offer here - this music is deep, sincere and very carefully measured. On the closing piece 'Bridget Riley' Elliott's ideas finally slide together in perfect harmony and he turns in a piece that is a testament to his vision. As the gorgeous cascading harmonies reach a satisfying close, you can be safe in the knowledge that beauty is alive and well, no matter what they keep trying to tell us. A breathtaking piece of work - a massive recommendation."
